Whether you send an email blast to every coach or you plan on creating informative signage, here are some field-protective tips to share: 

• No metal cleats or cleats with excessive studs: Rubber and plastic cleats are the safest choice for artificial turf. Enforcing this requirement prevents surface tears and excessive infill dispersal. 

• No leaving heavy equipment on the field: If teams utilize pitching machines, large water coolers, or other heavy practice gear, ensure that these heavy objects are removed from the turf surface after each practice to avoid infill and fiber compaction. 

• No food or sweet drinks on the field: Advise teams to keep the snacks and sweet drinks in the gear bags, not on the turf surfaces. Be sure to place enclosed trash and recycle receptacles in an accessible location near the dugout and bleachers to encourage appropriate waste disposal. 

Depending on your field type, it may be necessary to implement security features and restricted hours of use. While the above rules are more difficult to enforce if you own/operate a public-access baseball field, implementing practical strategies like rule signage and fencing can go a long way in preventing field misuse and vandalism.
