1. Sightlines: Giving Everyone a Great View

A fan’s enjoyment depends entirely on what they can see. If someone has to constantly lean around the person in front of them, the seating design has failed.

In sports architecture, this is calculated using the C-Value. This is the mathematical formula used to make sure a spectator can see over the head of the person sitting in the row directly in front of them.

To achieve great sightlines without making the bleachers dangerously steep, modern grandstands often use a curved or variable slope. This means the seating rows get slightly steeper the higher up you go, giving fans in the top rows a clear, unobstructed view of the near sideline.

2. Accessibility: Creating Space for All Fans

Designing an accessible facility is about more than just checking a legal box. It is about making sure every community member can enjoy the game together. Modern design focuses on inclusion.

• Spread-Out Seating: Wheelchair-accessible spots shouldn’t just be stuck in the very back or front corners. They should be integrated throughout the stands at different heights and price points.
• Companion Seats: Every wheelchair location needs a regular seat next to it so friends and families can sit together.
• Gentle Ramps: Ramps must have a gentle slope (a maximum 1-inch rise for every 12 inches of length) and regular flat landings so they are easy to navigate for strollers, walkers, and wheelchairs.

3. Materials: Balancing Cost, Comfort, and Lifespan

Grandstands are a long-term investment. Choosing the right materials keeps maintenance costs low and fans comfortable.

• Aluminum: The go-to choice for bleacher planks and footrests. It is lightweight, won’t rust, and naturally reflects heat so it doesn’t get too hot in the summer.
• Galvanized Steel: Used for the underlying heavy support structure. It provides immense strength and durability for large crowds.
• High-Density Plastic (HDPE): Ideal for adding individual chairbacks or premium seating sections. It resists UV fading, won’t crack in the cold, and is much more comfortable than a flat bench.

Many schools and colleges use a hybrid system. They install a steel frame for strength, aluminum benches for general seating, and plastic chairbacks for a designated “premium” home-team section.

4. Safety and Crowd Control

When thousands of fans cheer, jump, and leave all at once, the structure has to handle the stress.

• Quick Exits: Aisles, stairs, and exit gates must be wide enough to completely empty the stands within a few minutes in an emergency.
• Handling the Weight (Live Loads): Spectators don’t sit still. Stands must be engineered to withstand “sway loads” (fans moving side-to-side) and vertical loads (fans jumping in celebration) without vibrating or stressing the metal.

5. Upgrading the Fan Experience

To get fans off their couches and into the stadium, the facility needs to offer a great experience.

• Shade and Cover: Adding structural roofs or fabric canopies protects fans from burning sun and sudden rain, keeping them in their seats longer.
• Open Concourses: Modern stadiums are designed so that when fans walk to the concession stand or restrooms, they can still see the field. They never have to miss a big play while waiting in line.
