Project Summary

Keystone Sports Construction recently completed the design-build of Kris’s Meadow turf field at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

The Client

Wilson College is a historic liberal arts institution with a rich past and a growing athletics program known as the Phoenix. The 300-acre campus sits along the Conococheague Creek and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Challenge

As the school’s athletic program continued to expand, so did the demand for facilities capable of supporting its student-athletes and broader campus community. The school responded by investing in a design-build transformation of its athletic complex, featuring a synthetic turf field designed to deliver lasting performance, versatility, and an enhanced athletic experience.

Construction Process

This design-build project consisted of several steps, starting with the excavation of the site. A drainage system and a stone sub-base were then installed and laser-graded before the synthetic turf was installed. Afterward, Shaw Sports Turf’s SpikeZone turf system with a thatch zone was installed for the field. New chain-link fencing was installed around the perimeter of the field, and a new ballstop system was installed.

FAQs

What is GAME ON? GAME ON is a turf system from Shaw Sports Turf that uses tufted-in technology to design turf elements, tufting logos and lines into the turf and removing the need for inlaid turf seams. This improves field quality and safety while also streamlining the installation process.

What is a Design-build? Design-build is where one entity, the design-builder, enters into a single contract with the owner to provide both design and construction services. In all other project delivery systems, there are separate contracts for design and construction. The single contract for both design and construction is the design-build distinction.
